What’s in? What’s out? Does anyone know what the latest trends are right now? Does God? Is God trendy?
True Story Ahead
I just spent the last hour learning about some of the latest graphic design trends. Then, I started looking at trending photos I could use in some of these super cool designs. Then I tried to take one of my own photos with my iPhone because that’s become all the rage now. And that’s when I remembered something.
I’m not a photographer!
Even though I have trendy shoes on today, and I thought they’d look cool in my graphic design somehow my photographic attempts did not look “trendy.” They looked like someone accidentally hit the camera button on their phone while walking.
Moving On
Want to know why I’m wearing trendy shoes? Because my 24-year daughter decided one day when we were shopping that she was not going to let me dress like an old lady…ever!
So, she convinced me to buy a pair of black and white slip-on sneakers to wear with my new ankle slip-on travel pants that kind of look like sweatpants except they’re NOT! They’re made from very nice fabric that doesn’t stretch, wrinkle, or shrink! My kind of pants.
Here’s the thing I’m learning about trends. They always keep changing.
Just when I think I’ve finally got the right wardrobe, trends change. We go from loose to tight, short to long, turtle necks to off the shoulder shirts with ruffles.
Jewelry changes too. One year short chunky necklaces wrap around our necks and the next season long necklaces hang down to our belts.
Then there’s hairstyles. Once upon a time I permed my hair to make it curly. Then after about a decade I decided not to do that anymore and guess what? Turns out my hair has its own natural curls.
What about trending hair color? There’s highlights, ombres, balayage, and sombres. Okay, but the latest hair color trend is just plain wrong. Young women are intentionally choosing to color their hair silver! Are you serious? Why? Why would you want to make your hair gray on purpose? Most of us “older” women color our hair to cover up the gray or silver or whatever color you want to call it.
Do you see what I mean? Trends keep changing.
God is NOT Trendy
That’s what I like about God. He’s not trendy. God doesn’t ever change.
Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
Because God stays the same, we can trust that what He says is lasting. It’s a whole lot easier to know what God wants from us in any generation or season because His Word doesn’t change.
God’s ways are not trendy. He doesn’t say to us, “Oh kindness was so in last year, but this year, it’s all about being rude.”
Or…
“Love was all the rage last season, but not anymore. Hate is trendy now.”
You’re never going to see a headline in the Bible like, ”Top Winter God Trends” or “God Trends for 2018.”
God stays the same. His ways remain forever.
So while I may want to keep in style with graphic designs, photographs, or shoes, and I may want to be “with it,” so my daughter doesn’t think I look like an “old lady,” the most important thing is that I keep in style with God.
And that doesn’t make me old-fashioned or unstylish. Living like God wants me to live actually makes me trustworthy too.
I’d much rather be trustworthy than trendy.
P.S. I’m never coloring my hair silver! So if you ever see me with silver hair, just know someone else colored it for me without asking me.
