Read the title again. Out loud this time. Now pause. Think about what you just said out loud. Do you believe that sentence?
There’s a communication theory called the Johari Window Model, which is a technique used to help people better understand themselves and others. There are four areas in the Johari window:
- Open Area: Known to self and known to others.
- Blind Area: Unknown to self, but known to others.
- Hidden Area: Known to self, but unknown to others.
- Unknown Area: Unknown to self and unknown to others.
I found this communication theory fascinating when I first learned about it in my undergraduate studies. It’s so true that there are things I know about myself and others know these same things about me too. It’s also true, others know things about me that I don’t know about myself. We all have “blind spots.” I want to just add, not all blind spots are negative by the way. Sometimes what others know about us and we don’t is actually a good thing. Like someone may know you’re really good at something, but you don’t know you’re really good at it.
It’s also true that there’s a hidden area in each of our lives. This is the place we don’t let others know about us. We choose to keep some things about ourselves hidden or secret.
The fourth area, the Unknown-to-everyone area, I’ve come to believe God knows. Here’s why I believe this. In Psalm 139:13-16 it says that when God created us, when we were hidden in our mother’s wombs, He saw us. He saw us even when we were formless. Even though we were made in a secret place, nothing was hidden from God. I love this!
Jesus knows everything about me. At the beginning of Psalm 139 it says in verses 1-6:
Lord, You have searched me and known me.
2 You know when I sit down and when I stand up;
You understand my thoughts from far away.
3 You observe my travels and my rest;
You are aware of all my ways.
4 Before a word is on my tongue,
You know all about it, Lord.
5 You have encircled me;
You have placed Your hand on me.
6 This extraordinary knowledge is beyond me.
It is lofty; I am unable to reach it.
How marvelous that God Himself has knowledge beyond me about me. He knows everything about me even stuff I don’t know about myself and neither does anyone else.
He knows you too.
Jesus is the Knower of us all. Each individual person Jesus knows.
“I am the Good Shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me” (John 10:14).
He even knows how many hairs are on your head (Matthew 10:30).
And He knows our names.
“But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: ‘Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine’” (Isaiah 43:1).
Friends, we may have hidden stuff from others. Others may hide stuff from us. But Jesus knows us all and everything about us.
Jesus is the Knower of me and you.
My hope this Advent season is that you will accept that Jesus knows you, everything about you, and He wants you to choose to get to know Him better. He has amazing things to tell you about you. There’s so many unknowns yet to become known. My prayer is that you will choose to look through the window and let Jesus the Knower show you what He knows.
