If Jesus showed up at your job today, approached you, and said to you, “Come, follow me,” would you stop what you’re doing and follow Him?
I read this morning two of the Gospel accounts of when Jesus approached Simon Peter and his brother Andrew while they were at work. Now they were fishermen out on their boat, working. They were casting their net into the Sea of Galilee when Jesus unexpectedly shows up.
It would be like Jesus coming into your office while you are typing a policy, or if you’re a surgeon, Jesus walks right into the operating room. Or if you’re a chef prepping for the lunch rush, and in comes Jesus, and He says, “Come, follow me.”
Something tells me, sadly, many of us would not stop what we are doing to follow Him.
But Simon Peter, Andrew, James and John immediately stopped what they were doing and followed Him. Immediately.
What hinders us from dropping what we’re doing to follow Jesus? Moreover, what hinders us from even setting aside a few minutes each day to spend time in His Presence? All the work, the tasks, the stuff we “need” to do, is that it? Is our work more important than stopping what we’re doing to spend even a moment in His Presence?
Jesus is still looking for disciples. He’s still seeking people who will accept and assist Him in the spreading of the good news of salvation and redemption. Simon Peter, John, Andrew, and James aren’t here anymore to spread the good news of Jesus Christ. That’s our job now.
My plea to you at the beginning of this work week is to stop what you’re doing right now, enter into Jesus Presence, spend a few minutes with Him, and see how He wants you to follow Him today. You may be surprised that what you have planned may not be what Jesus has planned for you to do today.
Scripture:
Matthew 4:18-22 – As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they they left nets and followed him. Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
