In the darkness of the earliest hours of the day, I dance. As the sun peaks over the horizon, I dance. Bursting forth within me with all its might is the joy of the Lord! I dance with all my might because my soul cannot be still. It has to be in joyous motion and my whole body needs to respond in like.
Have you ever been to a wedding dance and people were just cutting loose? You can tell they are all in. Their whole body is celebrating in dance. Have you ever been one of those undignified dancers? I have.
Have you been filled with so much gladness that you cannot sit still, you just have to get up and do a jig? This happens to me often. More and more actually I find myself in the earliest moments of my day dancing before the Lord.
King David is one my best friends. He doesn’t know that, but he is. I love his zeal and courage and his passion for Christ. One of my favorite stories about him comes from 2 Samuel 6 when he brought the ark of the Lord back to Jerusalem. This was a celebration!
I love celebrations! This is something King David and I have in common.
The Bible says that David danced with all his might before the Lord. This means he invested his whole physical body into this dance. And he was not ashamed either. In fact after the dance party was over and he returned to his own home, he discovered his wife Michal was embarrassed by his actions. She tried to make him feel humiliated. I love King David’s response, “I will celebrate before the LORD. I will become even more undignified than this” (2 Samuel 6:21-22).
He was all in. David didn’t let his status as king prevent him from worshipping the King of Kings in a very public dance party. He wasn’t going to let even his wife prevent him from rejoicing before the Lord in dance in public. King David would worship God in dance in public. Now that’s worthy of imitating.
Okay, so maybe I’m not (yet) dancing before the Lord in public, but I sure do in private in the wee hours of the morning.
One of my favorite songs is once again from Rend Collective, “I Will Be Undignified.” Oh yes I will. I turn on this song and cut loose with all my might dancing at dawn before the Divine.
We have an amazing God. If you haven’t ever danced at dawn for the Divine before, I say, it’s time to kick off your shoes and dance.
Let’s be undignified dancers for the Lord Jesus!
Scripture:
2 Samuel 6:14-15 – Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the LORD with all his might, while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the LORD with shouts and the sound of trumpets.
