I was reading in Matthew 4 this morning where Jesus was tempted by the devil. Three times when the devil tempted Him, Jesus’ response began with “It is written…” Then Jesus quoted Scripture. I noticed the Scripture was from Deuteronomy. Being curious, I looked up those words. Which led me to other Scriptures that intrigued me. I noticed the description: stiff-necked. Who me? Ouch!
The Bible says we are to not be stiff-necked. That means, we are not to be stubborn. Rather we are to circumcise our hearts. Meaning we are to cut out the unyielding parts of our hearts that prevent us from being gentle, submissive, and kind.
I don’t know about you, but when I’m being stiff-necked, I’m not a very pleasant person. I’m not kind. I’m not loving. I’m not willing to yield my heart or mind to another.
I don’t want to be a stiff-necked person. Today, I plead my case before the Lord and ask Him to cut out the hard stuff in my heart so that my heart can be more tender, more gentle. I want a pleasing heart and flexible neck (if you will).
Are you a stiff-necked person? Stop what you’re doing, bow before the Lord, ask for forgiveness, and then ask Jesus to tenderize you.
Scripture:
Deuteronomy 10:16 – Circumcise your hearts, therefore, and do not be stiff-necked any longer.
