Reading through the book of Matthew has been eye-opening for me. This morning I noticed something very real. Life was hard for people back then. People were diseased, dirty, demon-possessed, and dead. I’ve noticed something else though too. I noticed they did one particular action. Come with me, and I’ll tell you what to do when life is hard.
When life is hard, what do we do?
Come.
Come to Jesus.
Story after story in Matthew I’ve noticed the people “came” to Jesus, or they “brought” someone to Jesus. Listen to these examples:
- Matthew 8:2 – A man with leprosy came and knelt before him…
- Matthew 8:5 – When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him asking for help…”Lord, my servant lies at home paralyzed…”
- Matthew 8:16 – When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him…
- Matthew 9:2 – Some men brought to him a paralytic, lying on a mat…
- Matthew 9:18 – While he was saying this, a ruler came and knelt before him and said, “My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her and she will live.”
These are just a few of the examples of how hard life was for people. They believed Jesus was the answer to their hard life. They came to Jesus. They brought others to Him who could not bring themselves.
Friends, this is what we need to do.
Come.
Come to Jesus.
No matter how hard life is. Our response is to come to Him.
Earlier this week I encouraged us to Ask. Seek. Knock. I also encouraged us to Go.
We can add another word to our collection of one-word action steps this week: Come.
Come to Jesus.
If people who were diseased with leprosy, demon-possessed, paralyzed, and dead (it doesn’t get any harder than that) went to Jesus for help and He helped them, we can be sure we can come to Jesus too, and we will be helped. We can bring others to Jesus too, and they will be helped.
These stories are true stories. They are inspiring to me. Every. Single. Time. Someone came to Jesus, He stopped what He was doing and helped them. He knew how hard life was for them. He listened. He went with them. He was available. He helped those who came to Him.
He will do the same for us.
No matter how hard life is, how we conquer difficulty in our life is with Jesus. But we have to our part.
If life is hard for us today, let’s come to Jesus.
