I’m pretty sure everyone gets in a funk from time to time. I think it’s important to know how to handle our funk especially during difficult seasons in our lives, like the unemployment season, the transitional season, the holiday season, the waiting season, the wedding-planning season, the sickness season, the final exams season. Truly there are many difficult seasons and many opportunities for funk to happen. In today’s blog post, I share a true story what happened to me early yesterday and how I got out of a funk.
True Story Ahead
I was in a funk yesterday morning. Shocker, right? I know. I know. People mostly see the “happy, energetic, you-can-do-it” Michelle. Well, that’s not complete truth about who I am. Sometimes, things get me down, troubled, and discouraged too.
But here’s what I do, I get into my funk hole. If you have not heard of a funk hole, I’m excited to be the one to inform you this is a place of safe retreat. My funk hole is being alone with Jesus, usually in my writer’s room. Then I bring all my troubles to Him.
Wow did I bring it ALL to Him yesterday morning. I felt like an erupting volcano. As I was erupting I felt horrible. I started thinking that maybe I didn’t trust God after all.
Eye roll. Ridiculous! Of course, I trust Jesus.
Do you see what our enemy tries to do to us? He tries to get us frightened, so we’ll shrink back. He tries to rob us of our courage so we start thinking we’re cowards, not good enough, can’t do something. Or worse, that Jesus isn’t trustworthy, and we should not trust Him.
Sometimes, the funk the enemy tries to drag us into is a pity party. Well, I’m not one to shrink back for long. There was a time in my life I did, but not any longer. I’m not doing that funky thing at a pity party.
Choose Your Funk Hole
If I’m going to be in a funk, I’m choosing which funk hole I do it in. I choose the one where I know I’ll actually be safe, find help, and emerge renewed and reenergized. I want freedom from my funk.
Yesterday as I unveiled my funk to Jesus, He just let me dump. He listened for a long time. Then, as usual, He led me to Scripture, and not just any Scripture, but one He’s led me to many times over the years.
Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. ~Psalm 37:4
This, my friends, is how I got out of my funk. I realized as soon as I read these words, “Delight yourself in the LORD” I was going to be free of my funk.
I immediately obeyed God’s Word. I stopped reading and started verbally and non-verbally expressing my delight in Jesus. I said repeatedly out loud, “I love you, Jesus.”
Then I turned on a favorite Chris Tomlin song and listened over and over. Praising Jesus. Yes and Amen! I sang, danced, and delighted in my Lord.
Even while writing this blog post, I’ve stopped, turned on another favorite song and let the old enemy know, I’m free from my funk because I got something that makes the devil run. I got my Jesus!
How To UnFunk
Friends, if you find yourself in a funk, choose your funk hole, and make sure Jesus is there with you.
Then unfunk (yes, I did just make up another word) on Jesus and let Him free you of the funk.
My hope is that you’ll be joining me in a sing and dance production for Jesus. Our enemy hates that. He won’t stay for the “Delight yourself in the LORD” production. I guess he’s not a “happy, energetic, you-can-do-it” kind of guy.
My advice on how to get out of a funk? Find your funk hole and then delight yourself in the LORD.
