There’s nothing quite like a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest. This truth comes directly from the Bible.
Let the holiday fun begin! My long holiday weekend began after work today. Ah, such a lovely feeling knowing I have the next five days off my full-time work and five days of fun ahead.
I’m all for fun! In fact, fun is a core value of mine. Festivities, shopping, decorating, and celebrating with family and friends all fun!
All the things I listed are fun, but they can also be tiring, just like work tires us.
Work and Rest
There are many Bible verses about both work and rest, but I found this gem today:
A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest— Proverbs 6:10, NIV
While we need to obey God’s word regarding not being lazy and working hard, we need to obey this verse too. Work is good, but we all need a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest too.
November New Challenge
This November New Challenge along with numerous other activities this month required extra energy and focus. I plan to rest a little over the next few days. Restoration is good for our heart and soul, mind, and body. Chugging along day after day, working non-stop doesn’t impress Jesus. He designed a Sabbath for a reason. Even Jesus took time to rest.
As I mentioned in Are You Living an Unhurried Life?, Jesus is relaxed. He’s not in a hurry. If we follow Jesus’ example, this is an area we probably need to practice being a little more like Him. At least I know I do.
Therefore, I’ve determined to savor the season. Not rush through it. This may mean giving up a few things to slow down and savor the season. But truth be told, I’m ready to slow down in some areas of my life. Rushing everywhere all the time exhausts us.
And so, while the fun holiday festivities begin this week and will last for the next five to six weeks, let’s be intentional to schedule a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest too.
Blessing
May we have fun this holiday season. May we work hard for the Lord when we are to work, but may we obey Him as well with a little sleep, a little slumber, and a little folding of the hands to rest.
