In a world where it’s become increasingly more difficult to stand firm in our faith, it’s even more important that we do because if we don’t, we will surely shipwreck our lives. We need to diligently cling to our faith. What does it look like when we do and when we don’t?
I watch the show “The Deadliest Catch.” One of the most important rules on these crab ships is to keep both feet planted when they cast the ropes. If the fisherman lifts his foot off the floor, the rope can catch his foot and snag him. Then he can be dragged into the sea with the thousand pound crate used to catch the crab. It can be a deadly mistake to not keep your feet firmly planted.
Likewise, if the captain of the crab boat doesn’t monitor the weather, the waves, and the wind, the boat can quickly lose control and direction and shipwreck. When these crab boats are out at sea, it’s incredibly important that the captain control his own conduct. He cannot lose sight of his responsibilities. If he does not only his life is endangered, but the whole crew’s lives are endangered.
The captain needs to follow the rules, be intentional in his behavior and conduct when he’s navigating the ship on the sea. Being shipwrecked is a constant danger. There is never a moment when this is not a threat. But if the captain and the crew cling to the rules, follow them, are deliberately paying attention to their work, to their crew mates, to the power of the sea, and to their own vulnerability, then the ship is being controlled by them. Being shipwrecked from these circumstances won’t happen.
So it is with our faith in Jesus. If we are diligent in practicing what the Bible instructs us how to live, we won’t shipwreck our faith.
If we cling to our faith, like a fisherman’s feet cling to the floor of the boat, then we won’t be in danger of being snagged. Our lives will be safe, and we can actually help keep others’ lives safe too.
Friends, cling to your faith in Christ, no matter what. It doesn’t matter what others say to you. Follow the instructions of the Bible. Choose to live your life according to what God says you are to live, not according to what the world tells you, or your friends, or your coworkers or anyone else who is trying to tell you it’s okay to not follow God’s rules.
Sometimes, we are tempted to lift our feet off the boat floor. Don’t do it. You risk too much danger when you are not firming planted in God’s Word and following His rules.
Cling to your faith in Jesus!
Scripture:
1 Timothy 1:19 – “Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked.”
